WHY I WALK

Out and About I had a half dozen errands, the weather bitter cold and yet it is not a consideration not to walk; hardware store, some coffee beans, the library, art museum . . . . I am thirsty ~ And this is why I walk. Crossing the river on the way back I pause to admire the flows of ice and there is the great blue heron, the guardian of the river.

WATER is taught by thirst;
Land, by the oceans passed;
  Transport, by throe;
Peace, by its battles told;
Love, by memorial mould;
  Birds, by the snow.

THE PRACTICE

New Year’s Day morning run, 8+ miles, 1000’ of climbing up Mount Sentinel and across. Fully clothed with everything I could locate including cleats and gaiters, extra underwear and …. after all it was just 3˚F and with a 10 knt wind in the valley corridor, but just a light breeze along the slope trail.

Get up, feed the cat, have a drink of water, get dressed, say a prayer for others, put a mark on a blank sheet of paper . . . and go out for a run; the practice.

Missoula Valley above the ‘M’ along the slope of Mount Sentinel 9am 1:January 2019 :: all alone on the trail.
