Green Earth

I’ve been having a rather difficult transition to my seventh decade. And this has slowed to a stop all work on the press and most of my running on the trails. Multiple surgeries later I am only now starting to put my body back together in working-a-bit-less order. And my annual conference participation, while having friend and new-friend related high points, seems to weather with personal disappointments. I don’t think my talk was well delivered (in part due to the above mentioned physical issues). I wonder if anybody realized what XR is, what OIKOS means or that they were letterpress printed. Seems a wasted effort and expense now. And my map “The Gate at The Crossing at El Coyote on the Vamori Wash to Many Dogs Place” was at best a complete disaster. I say this because it seems on reflection that nobody (or as near to nobody as possible) saw it, saw it as a map, or took the time to understand it as an outsider-map. It was in an earlier form, I should note, seen by Guerrilla Cartography and available in PDF form in their recently released Migration Atlas.

How do we deliver on the one hand something so different from the dominating paradigm, outsider-voices, and on the other open our eyes, heart ears and being to what is outside the dominating corporate and objectified box in which we are more or less trapped in functioning? My role as an artist is to speak of things outside this space and yet I feel I fail over and over again to deliver in a manner to be seen, to have a voice. Perhaps I am greedy in the desire of my ego . . . and should be grateful to those who did hear and see me.

As soon as I start feeling better the two broadsides, “Support the Green New Deal” and “Put Earth First” will return to the press with wet ink and fresh cut paper. If you are interested in one let me know ASAP and I will reserve on for you . . . as the GND run (using the #p22blox modular BLOX type) is a very limited run in three colors from four matrices.

Put Earth First

On the western coast

Earlier this month I attended the annual #nacis North American Cartographic and Information Society meeting in Tacoma, Wash. Driving west, and suddenly dropping down off the plateau …. and crossing the River Columbia.
Conferences are more about the friends and professional contacts and less about the talks. I’m sure mine was equally as uninteresting as many. As usual my map “The Gate” was more or less ignored, unseen I imagine because it is not perceived to be a map. Show up, vote, speak, make yourself visible, speak on behalf of all beings.
… a delightful fun run took us along the waterfront. It is really amazing how one becomes invisible as one gets older. I felt so on this run.
What a boring map, another in the endless objectification of the livingness of the world. Here in Tacoma the goddess of commerce asserts her presence.
The old Union Station (home to 49 trains daily in its heyday) train depot, now the court house, has a beautiful display of Dale Chihuly glass. It was the only place I could see works of art aside from the hotel because of the cost of admission. In keeping with commerce being a goddess I guess.

In the late 60s-early 70s I passed through this depot on the North Coast Limited from points east …. not anymore.
